A card machine only really gets tested during your busiest hour. If your current terminal struggles when the evening rush hits, it’s worth taking a proper look at whether it’s actually built for how your takeaway trades.
Most terminal comparisons focus on monthly fees, but for a takeaway counter, transaction speed during peak periods is arguably more important. A terminal that takes an extra few seconds per transaction doesn’t sound like much — until you multiply it across a Friday night queue and count the customers who walked off instead of waiting.
A fixed countertop terminal works well if all your transactions happen at one till point. A portable terminal gives more flexibility if you also take payment away from the counter — at the door for collections, for instance. A mobile terminal running on its own data connection is worth considering if your broadband has ever gone down during service, since it doesn’t share that single point of failure.
Beyond speed, check two things specifically: what you’re actually paying per transaction (not just the headline monthly cost), and whether your provider offers next-day settlement, so your takings land in your account the following working day rather than several days later.
If you’re not confident your current card machine setup is right for how busy your counter actually gets, a quick review usually makes the gap obvious — whether that’s fees, terminal type, or simply a more reliable connection.
